Thanks for the comment Kay. Even on a runaway case, we search for the juvenile with a goal of returning them to their parents. Most times, the child has a history of running away, the parents or siblings have reason to believe the child has run away etc. In cases where the parents believe something is suspicious, we look at those as a possible abduction (these are few and far between). So the point is, they get the attention they deserve. The other point is, social media is the least reliable or effective way to get the word out because most times, the message is posted by a friend and not the family (we have one of those on our facebook page right now ). These cases are complicated, and we are constantly trying to adapt and do the best for the families.

I dont wanna seem like a complainer but what if it is not a runaway and police overlook and girl is actually abducted and later found deceased. There needs to be a deal just for those uncertain even tho it comes just to be that. For the safety of our community so to speak

Agree. It is sad that this monster should have any rights after the horrific acts he performed. Obviously he has NO morals what so ever. The damage he has instilled in these young girls and their families is irreversible. He should be held responsible for ALL legal, medical, and any other charges that these girls and their families have accumulated and will accumulate as a result of his acts for the rest of their lives. What he did is unforgivable. I know he will receive the right judgement when our dear LORD recons with him for these atrocious acts!

Thank you Linda and thank you for reading. The relationship between media and law enforcement is a two-way effort and when it goes bad, there is plenty of blame to go around. It can become a perfectly good lose-lose situation.

Sorry for late response Larry. Probably not in this case. If the poster had reported her being abducted or kidnapped, then possibly, but she was reported on the post as being "missing" It's also possible the use of the term "Amber Alert" in this way could be protected somehow but that's a whole different issue. Appreciate you reading and commenting.

Question: Is it a crime to create "fake" communications designed to look official, like the one described in your story above? If so, is anyone ever prosecuted? Thanks in advance for your time.

Right!
I liken the media's drive to release information haste-fully (through social media and otherwise) to our culture's continual evolution towards the "I want it NOW" attitude. I don't believe this behavior is necessarily for the better, long term.

Too many times I have been in social situations where a cohort was so busy posting their "status/location", or making certain a photo they posted was sprinkled with enough wit, that they failed to reflect upon or even realize the actual reality surrounding them; this includes those around them that might enjoy actually talking to them face-to-face, and not to a half attentive "millennial" who can't wait to see how many likes their digital cleverness earned them.

Perhaps some venting there, however, I agree wholeheartedly with your comment "nothing good comes without challenges". I am optimistic that the short-term "growing pains" associated with the digital/social media age will, like many other challenges, iron themselves out in due time.
